Chapter 7

WHY THE HELL HAD HE offered to train Zoe? He didn’t have time for it with his current case. But something about seeing her standing there all alone had tugged at something. She had a strength there he admired. He’d never trained a guardian before – by a trainer’s standards, he was too young. But the Circle hadn’t objected. None of them could train her but they’d want to know what he did, and Raf hadn’t seemed keen to do it himself.

They were to meet at the local cafe. The small cafe was quiet. It had whitewashed walls covered in pictures of gardens and tiny little tables covered in red checked tablecloths. Nick moved outside to where there was a small private courtyard with a couple of metal tables and chairs sitting there. He sat down and pulled out his tablet while he waited for Zoe to get there. He hoped she’d moved past their earlier encounter now. He’d apologised for goodness sake.

Zoe rounded the corner wearing jeans and her grey jacket. She slumped into the chair opposite him, dumping her bag at her feet. “So, when does the torture begin?”

“Hello to you too. No torture but I’ve been thinking about your situation and figured you should come to work for me. It’ll make training easier.”

Her mouth fell open. “I don’t have PI training.”

“True, but you have a pretty diverse background, and I think you can adapt,” Nick said. “Plus, I kind of owe you for the job thing.” He had caused her to lose her job, but he couldn’t have left the Jimano wandering around. It still made him wonder how such things managed to cross over from the other side. Most of the worst dark fey had been banished decades ago during the guardians’ war when the guardians had banded together to banish the worst kinds of fey into another dimension.

She arched an eyebrow. “You think?” Zoe snorted. “I’m not sure I want to be a guardian, let alone be dragged into the fey world.”

“You’re already in this world, princess. It’s in your blood. Don’t you want to know where that curse of yours came from?” Nick still felt curious about learning more about her curse. He’d never encountered anyone, let alone a guardian, with a curse. He couldn’t imagine why anyone would do such a thing. What would be the point of erasing her memories or stopping her from remembering something? If he could at least find out where she’d come from it would be a clue to getting those answers.

She flinched at the word ‘curse’. “You don’t know I’m cursed.”

“Oh, madam witch knows her stuff,” he remarked. “Here’s the deal – you help me on my case, I, in turn, teach you to be a guardian. You have to prove to the Circle you’re not a threat to them.”

“I’m not, but that doesn’t mean I want to be like you.” She crossed her arms and sighed. “If I agree to this, will you help me find my family?” Zoe leaned forward and raised her eyebrows.
